Microsoft has been promoting Silverlight as an alternative to Flash for two years. While Silverlight gives the developers quite a lot of possibilities, it still did not become as popular as the product of Adobe.
After more than a year of work, a team of programmers led by Miguel de Icaza has announced a Linux version of Moonlight 1.0, open-source implementation of Microsoft's Silverlight technology. Immediately after the release of Silverlight 1.0, Microsoft started the cooperation with Novell to create a Linux alternative to Adobe Flash technology. The project was initiated during the MIX07 conference and now is available under GNU LGPLv2.
