Google has launched public DNS servers

googleGoogle has launched two publicly available DNS servers. Their IP addresses are easy to remember. The primary DNS server address is 8.8.8.8 and the secondary server is available at 8.8.4.4.

Google says that servers are faster and safer than other DNS servers. The high performance is ensured by the active prefetching. This technology makes it possible to avoid the situation when a user queries a record that has already expired and is not present in the cache.

In order to improve the servers' security, Google has implemented the following procedures: random change in the capitalization of queries, random source ports, adding random tags to queries and a random selection of addresses. In addition, data validation is carried out and duplicate and suspicious entries are removed. Google has also implemented protection against DoS attacks.
