Yahoo! closes GeoCities

Yahoo! has decided to shut down GeoCities – the well-known and popular throughout the world free hosting service.

GeoCities is an Internet icon - one of the first free hosting services that was launched in 1994. When in 1999 it was bought by Yahoo!, GeoCities was the third (after Yahoo! And AOL) the most viewed site in the world with 19 million unique visitors a month. Since then, GeoCities has not been developed and today in the era of Web 2.0 services, it is rather outdated.

Now Yahoo! has decided to close the service - the new registrations are no longer accepted and existing accounts will be open until the end of the year. The company encourages users to migrate to commercial hosting service - Yahoo! Web Hosting. The cost of such a migration is about 110 USD per year.
