25 years of Windows within 10 minutes
Update, update, update. Is it possible to update from Windows 1.0 to Windows 7? Andrew Tait has posted on YouTube an extremely interesting video recording which shows the history of Windows but in a completely different way. Older readers can go back in time and recall the era of the first version of Windows as well as the transition to the era of computer media marked with the release of Windows 95.
The most interesting aspect of his video is not that we can observe the users’ interface development over time but the fact that his recording is a very interesting experiment. Using the virtual machine VMWare, he installed all subsequent versions of Microsoft systems. Have you ever wondered whether you can move on one line from 25 years old Windows 1.0 to the latest Windows 7?
At the beginning, still under the control of DOS (!), he installed the Doom and Monkey Island games. Why? To verify if old DOS games can survive subsequent Windows updates. In addition, Tait has applied some GUI configuration changes associated with the colors of individual items. Subsequent Windows systems were also tested for saving the previous settings which were introduced in version 2.0 (the first Windows version that allowed to change the colors of the user interface.
Everyone who thinks that after the whole update process, Windows 7 is free from residues of previous versions, is wrong. After subsequent updates, Windows 7 is full of historical treasures :-).
